In Search of Chekhov's Three Sisters

Presented by Frank Wood –

Held in person

“I have been in three productions of Three Sisters and because each of them wore heavy frames of interpretation I long to produce a of study of it along naturalistic or realistic lines; a study that would include the ephemeral poetry of the human spirit but doesn’t comment on Chekhov with Soviet relocation or Samovars presented as aquariums containing the heads of opera singers in mid aria.” – Frank Wood

In this acting, text analysis, and dramaturgy class on Chekhov’s Three Sisters, we will work with various themes, such as the facts and politics of the play’s era, which will prompt us to draw analogies between historical and current events. The process of discovery is enlightening, so the research and the context in which to place the research is the magic potion for acting revelation. With Frank’s guidance, you will track down answers to questions that arise from the text. It is the investigation of the text and the difference between what is assumed and what is known that will be explored, and how that engages the imagination.

Sometimes an actor is not served by being a dramaturg. Though sometimes, the search is where we get our energy. In this class, we will utilize our cell phones in between readings to nail down certain facts and share them with the class. Additionally, we will study the argument and sub-arguments of the play to track down as much as we can for our performances. Join Frank on this exciting journey!
