Acting students in HB Studio's Hagen Core Training program

Respect in the Workplace & Studio

For all Students, Faculty, Staff and the Board of Directors: wherever HB-related work is taking place (whether at HB, online, or off-site) this Agreement guides how we come together as a community.

At HB Studio, we build upon the vision of Herbert Berghof and Uta Hagen, carrying their light forward into the present moment and toward the future we are shaping together. Their teachings of artistic integrity, personal discipline, collaboration, and the pursuit of truthful performance remain a guiding foundation. Today, we extend this legacy by asking: How do we live kindness? Where do we find support from one another? We strive to cultivate an ecosystem as an organism that regenerates through common decency, care and patience. In this living environment, nurturing and renewal are as vital as discipline and craft. This statement affirms HB Studio as a creative, respectful and supportive home for all (students, faculty, staff and members of the Board of Directors) recognizing the essential contributions each makes to sustaining and expanding the artistic mission of HB.

A respectful workplace is one where all are treated fairly and equitably, difference is acknowledged and valued, communication is open and civil, conflict is addressed and there is a culture of empowerment and cooperation. It is one in which we value each other’s contributions, work and roles, we value and respect similarities and differences and speak and listen to one another without judging, blaming or shaming. A respectful workplace is one where individuals make a sincere effort to understand varying points of view, accepting that others have values and beliefs that are different from their own.

Our staff are vital to the functioning of HB Studio, helping to maintain an environment where creativity and learning can flourish. Respect for staff includes honoring their time, professional expertise and the policies they uphold. Just as students and faculty are expected to bring discipline and dedication to the work, staff are entrusted with maintaining organizational integrity and infrastructure. All members of our community share responsibility for maintaining a culture of mutual accountability and care.

Artistic integrity lies at the heart of the studio. Uta Hagen always spoke of the importance of seeking truth in every character and scene. In this spirit, we ask our students and faculty to approach their work with honesty and a deep commitment to authenticity. This includes taking personal responsibility for preparation, respecting the process, and understanding that growth is not instant but a product of continuous effort and dedication.

Our community thrives on respect and collaboration. Every member, whether student or teacher, contributes to the creative process, and we must treat one another with care and support. Feedback should be constructive and given with kindness, while listening and collaboration should be rooted in professionalism. Professionalism also means maintaining clear boundaries. Keeping the focus on the work rather than on personal relationships or potentially troublesome interpersonal dynamics. Boundaries and respect for consent, including around physical touch, create the trust and safety necessary for artistic risk-taking and deeper exploration in the work. We embrace diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences, ensuring that HB Studio is a place where all voices are respected and heard.

We recognize that inherent power dynamics exist among students, faculty and staff. As such, we commit to practicing transparency, humility and accountability in all interactions. Respect is not only about tone and behavior, but also about being mindful of positional authority and how it is exercised. We are dedicated to creating an environment where every individual feels valued, regardless of their role or status, and where power is exercised responsibly, thoughtfully and with care.

At HB Studio, we believe in freedom of expression. We provide a space where artists can explore the full range of their emotions and ideas without fear of judgment, as long as they respect the dignity of others. We also take a firm stand against discrimination or harassment of any kind, ensuring that HB is an inclusive space where everyone can take artistic risks and express themselves freely.

Punctuality, consistency and commitment are essential to the work we do. Respecting the time of your peers and others is key to maintaining a smooth and productive learning environment. We expect all members of our community to show up for their work with regularity, to be punctual, prepared, and committed to their responsibilities. Respecting each other’s time and contributions is essential to sustaining a productive and supportive environment. Dedication to the craft is non-negotiable.

Beyond the work itself, respect for the studio environment is paramount. Our physical spaces (studios and common areas) are the foundation of our creative community, and we expect everyone to treat them with care. Cleanliness, organization and responsibility are expected after every use. The same goes for digital spaces. Whether in emails, social media or virtual classes, our interactions online must reflect the same professionalism and respect that we expect in person.

When conflicts arise, we believe in handling them with open communication and respect. If an issue occurs, we encourage addressing it directly, calmly, and with professionalism. Should further mediation be necessary, we have procedures in place to ensure fair resolution. Any serious breach of this Code of Conduct will be reviewed by HB’s leadership and may lead to disciplinary action, including dismissal. For guidance or conflict resolution, each stakeholder group should reach out to the appropriate contact:

  • Staff: Executive Leadership
  • Board of Directors: Board President
  • Students: Student Affairs
  • Faculty: Co-Executive Director, Programs

In essence, we uphold the values that have shaped HB Studio for decades. These values apply to every member of our community. By embodying the principles of artistic truth, mutual respect and disciplined work — whether in the studio, the office or the Theatre — we ensure that HB Studio remains a place where creativity, collaboration and care can thrive.

Creating and sustaining a respectful workplace is a shared responsibility across all roles and functions. It is a living, iterative process that reflects our evolving community and collective values.

Everyday as an actor I am so thankful for the tools and inspiration that have come from you all HB.
