The Hagen Master Class, On Your Terms
The influential theater artist and instructor Uta Hagen taught that acting is a disciplined way of seeing, listening and living truthfully under imagined circumstances. Uta Anywhere brings her beliefs and teachings to life outside of our classrooms, offering institutions, ensembles and cohorts outside of our downtown studios (or even outside of New York City) the opportunity to engage deeply with her work and legacy on their own terms.
Developed and delivered by HB Studio, Uta Anywhere is a multi-day, in-person or virtual immersion training process grounded in Hagen’s legendary master classes and her foundational texts, Respect for Acting and A Challenge for the Actor. The program is rigorous, practical and human; designed to sharpen technique and renew an actor’s relationship to acting itself. Uta Anywhere can be hosted at HB Studio’s historic NYC classrooms; presented in-person with our teaching artists at your offices, theater or classroom; or held online via video seminars. For those traveling to New York City for training, you’ll spend time in the iconic Greenwich Village neighborhood where Hagen’s work took root and where HB Studio continues to train emerging actors today.
One Week to a Stronger Stage Presence
Uta Anywhere asks actors to slow down, work with precision, and rediscover the essential questions at the heart of performance. The program typically takes place over five consecutive days, generally Monday to Friday, with the flexibility to adapt to your needs. Each day of instruction is carefully structured to balance physical preparation, technical investigation, and sustained scene work. Mornings begin with vocal and physical warm-ups to cultivate self-awareness. Late mornings and early afternoons focus on acting techniques drawing directly from Hagen’s core exercises and principles. Afternoons are devoted to interactive scene study, allowing participants to apply the work in practice and keep scenes alive, responsive and truthful.
The emphasis of Uta Anywhere training is always on process rather than product. Artists are encouraged to interact honestly, work methodically, and develop tools they can carry into rehearsal rooms long after the class concludes. You will leave Uta Anywhere with a clearer physical and mental stage presence, replicable approaches to preparing for a role, and renewed confidence in your ability to sustain your craft between jobs.

Uta Anywhere is designed for groups of 8 to 15 participants and can be tailored to any level of theater experience. The program is offered at an all-inclusive flat fee, determined by HB administrators in response to the specific circumstances of your group. The typical cost for the program runs $12,000 to $20,000 USD. Note that travel, meals, and housing are the responsibility of the host institution, with local recommendations available from HB upon request.
