G. B. Shaw Scene Study

Presented by Austin Pendleton

An Uta Hagen Centennial Masterclass

Rehearsed scenes from the works of George Bernard Shaw are critiqued and worked on in class. In honor of her Centennial year, scenes will be drawn from the three Shaw plays in which Uta Hagen famously performed on Broadway: SAINT JOAN, MRS. WARREN’S PROFESSION, and YOU NEVER CAN TELL. Scenes may also be drawn from MAN AND SUPERMAN, CANDIDA, MISALLIANCE, HEARTBREAK HOUSE and PYGMALION.

In preparation for this workshop, you are encouraged to read the playwright’s plays — any of your choosing — and are invited to bring in a monologue for the first day of class.

Note: As many scenes as time allows will be presented each week, but it is not expected that all participants will present every session. For a deeper dive into the work, the full 10 weeks is recommended.
