Level Placement
All Level 1 classes are open to all. Students who would like to begin their course studies at level 2 or above must audition or submit an online student submission form. Students who are not placed at levels 2, 3, or 4 (Studio Practice) may not enroll in upper-level classes without an audition or a student submission.
Certain Workshops require a level placement or an application to be approved prior to registration. Students who do not meet the prerequisites may not register for the workshop. You will be dropped from any class or workshop for which you register without meeting the prerequisites, and a $27 administration fee will apply.
Acting Auditions
Acting auditions are submitted via self tape at the link below. Submissions are reviewed by a faculty member to assess your skills and make the best placement within HB Studio’s progression of classes. You will then be invited to choose from a menu of classes at the level you’ve been assigned.
Auditions are only required for classes above Level 1. Level 1 classes are available for registration without an audition. For more information on HB Studio’s Classes and Level progression, visit Choosing a Course of Study.
For your audition, please prepare the following:
- A headshot and current resume
- Either of these video options:
- Option 1: A self-taped audition which includes:
- Two contrasting contemporary monologues, 3 minutes each
- A brief a cappella song or portion of a song. This is not a test of your singing ability, but of your range as a performer.
- Option 2: A professional reel of your work as an actor.
- Option 1: A self-taped audition which includes:
Auditions are also required for The Hagen Core Training and The Hagen Summer Intensive, and are held separately. Visit the Hagen Institute pages for details. Playwrights new to HB seeking to study at an advanced level are asked to submit a full-length play for consideration. A $15 fee applies. Advanced workshops and other special programs generally require an online submission. Details are in the class description.
Continuing Students
Students already enrolled at HB Studio will receive diagnostic guidance from faculty as their work continues. At the end of each term faculty will make recommendations to those students who are prepared to move into a new level of study. Students wishing to be considered for a new level may “appeal” their instructor’s placement decision by scheduling an audition with the Studio’s faculty panel.
