Speech 1 is designed to develop your awareness of the physiological components and physical actions of speech. You will learn speech anatomy, with exploration and play through the vocal tract. The class will make a careful study of all the possible consonant actions and experiment with oral postures. You will begin to explore an international range of possible speech sounds, developing the ability to perceive and experience shades of difference. These fundamental practices will be useful to both native and non-native American speakers.
Classes with Craig Dolezel and Theresa McElwee draw upon Knight Thompson Speechwork. When choosing a Speech 1 class, please refer to instructors’ teaching statements and bios, found on the faculty page, as well as the Part A & B descriptions of their classes (below), for greater detail about their approach to meeting the course goals. Every instructor brings their own methods and experience and teaching styles vary. You are encouraged to read about and audit the classes of each instructor to find the right fit for you:
