Design for Living opened on Broadway in early 1933. Noël Coward, who wrote the play for himself and the Lunts, opted to premiere the work in New York rather than London, partly for fear of being denied a license by the Lord Chamberlain, then Britain’s official censor.

Commentary by Alan Pally with scenes performed by artists from the HB community, including Demetrius Blocker, Olivia De Salvo, Steven Eng, and Xavier Reyes. Scenes directed by Laura Esterman.

“I remembered the beauty of New York at night, viewed not from a smart penthouse on Park Avenue, but from a crowded seat in Washington Square. And it seemed, in spite of its hardness, and irritating, noisy efficiency, a great and exciting place.”

-Noël Coward, on his first trip to New York
