Shakespeare and the Musical Theater

Presented by: Stephen DeRosa

A workshop for actors and singers who would like to explore performing songs from musicals inspired by the plays of Shakespeare, and also have the option to read monologues or scenes from those Shakespeare plays themselves, in order to deepen your understanding of both. From the ROMEO AND JULIET inspired WEST SIDE STORY to the recent off-Broadway hit DESPERATE MEASURES based on MEASURE FOR MEASURE, a wealth of great music has been born from these timeless classics. Other musicals will include KISS ME, KATE; THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE; ALL SHOOK UP and many more. Even if you’re an actor who never sang or a singer who has never read Shakespeare, you’re very welcome. All you need is the Will!

“As a teacher my goal is to build your confidence as a performer by connecting you to the sources outside of yourself whether it be a scene partner, the audience, or the images you imagine. By focusing the energy of your voice through action in song or just speaking verse, you will breathe more deeply into the character and find new freedom as an artist.” – Stephen DeRosa
