Online Teaching Statement from Stefanie Proessl: “F.M. Alexander, an actor and the founder of the Alexander Technique, initially sought to overcome a persistent voice problem. In doing so he discovered a fundamental process that improves overall performance, (vocal) health and general well-being.
“The essence of the Alexander Technique can be taught effectively online. In my Zoom classes I will follow F.M. Alexander’s early methods, which did not involve hands-on teaching. I will introduce you to the paradigm shift that the Alexander Technique proposes in putting the focus on the process of attaining an outcome rather than on the outcome itself. Starting with our first meeting, I will introduce you to short procedures that will allow you to explore this reorientation, to spot interfering habits and see them as chances to re-orient yourself to ease. Recommended homework for my class consists of self-practice twice daily for 5-10 minutes.
“The Alexander Technique is not a treatment or adjustment. Students of the Technique acquire a skill that allows them to invite more conscious direction and ease into their lives. Performing artists will value the creative choices that will become available.”
